Morgan, Student Liaison, reported that he had attended the Third Annual Best
Practices in University/City Relationships. He also attended a workshop headed by Lisa
Dvorak to discuss creating a best practice. He is very pleased with the collaborative
effort taking place. There will be another meeting tomorrow at the Police Department at
3:30.
Kim Porterfield, Councilmember, reported that she had also attended the Best Practices
conference. She really enjoyed the session titled, "All About Trust". It was about
representatives from all aspects of a community coming together informally to build
relationships among all the entities. She noted that we have done this before on a more
formal basis. It is easier to come to the table and work out any issues if all are friends.
She also went on a tour of the new conference center and the TML Legislative Update in
Arlington.
Gaylord Bose, Councilmember, reported that he volunteered at the Rio Vista games again
and is just amazed at the number of people floating down the river. He heard much
praise for our image. He reminded everyone that Summerfest is Friday, and there will be
a lot of fireworks. It is our nation's birthday, we must step up and take responsibility; our
attitudes and behaviors will help our country to continue to grow and prosper.
Daniel Guerrero, Councilmember, thanked the emergency personnel for their response to
the explosion that occurred at the airport. He was impressed by the extraordinary
response from our firefighters and professional staff.
Pam Couch, Councilmember, thanked those who made the Juneteenth celebration a
success. She also thanked those that will make for a safe and happy Fourth of July. She
said she appreciated the tour of the Wonder World extension, and it is exciting to see
these things taking San Marcos to the next level.
John Thomaides, Councilmember, reported that the Wonder World Drive extension will
divert approximately 40 big trucks from town and will route 15,000 cars a day. He said it
was a commendable job of preserving the green areas, and the property is so beautiful.
He envisions it becoming a haven for motorists and cyclists alike. There are three miles
of steep grade that will be a great course for bicyclist training. He also reported on some
comments made at P&Z to the effect that San Marcos is standing in the way of growth.
He noted that he has been presented with a report on all zoning cases, and out of 166
cases only three were withdrawn, meaning less than 2% of all cases are denied. The
actual numbers do not bear out the negative comments.
PDFConvert.3086.1.RM070108 Minutes.doc
