Marihuana

Strychnine, Quinine

The color tests \"e developed are listed in Table I along 1>ii th the

family of drugs which can be identified by each test.

II. Thin-Layer Chromatography System

When a street drug sample contains a mixture of drugs" it becomes

difficult to identify the constituents of the drug mixture by color tests

alone for unique colors will not appear. In these cases, thin-layer

chromatography can be used to separate the cOnstituents of the drug mix-

ture and identify them when compared 'loa set of standards. Thin-layer

chromatography consists of a glass plate coated with a chemical, called

silica gel, being placed in a container that has a liquid mixture of

chemicals in the bottom of it. Before placing the coated plate in the

container, the plate is Spotted with a SOlution of the drug mixture as

well as with solutions of known drugs. As the plate sits in the container,

the liquid mixture of chemicals is absorbed by the silica gel on the plate

and rises up the plate. As it rises up the plate, it attracts the drugs

of the mixture and pulls them along with it. Depending on the attractive

force of the liquid chemical mixture for each drug of the drug mixture,

each drug will be pulled a different distance up the plate. After the
liquid mixture of chemicals has risen a given distance up the plate, the

plate is removed from the Container and allowed to air dry. After drYing,
