I

I

I

/~'"?#7

PROPOSAL FROM J.C. HARTLEY RE: MAUSOLEUM

Ma*,ch, 1971

Oh March 12, 1971, Mr. J,C. Hartley came to my office to

make a proposal to the City Council. Mr. Hartley owns the

Mausoleum in the San Marcos City Cemetery, and he wishes to

deed it to the City. The only provisions to the gift are:

1) That he be given assurance that the building and crypts

will be given "perpetual care", as guaranteed when he sold

the spaces; and 2) That he be allowed to retain the five

crypts which he had reserved for his own family's use,

Mr. Hartley bought 24 spaces @ $10.00 each (total: $240.00)

from the City, about 1958. He built the limestone building

at a cost in excess of $16,000. It covers the entire space,

except for a 3! ft. walk and landscaped area around the

building. The Mausoleum contains a total of 80 crypts,

of which 38 remain unsold. They are the proper size for a

standard casket. Mr. Hartley states that the present price

schedule is too low, 1n comparison with other mausoleums.

He has sold crypts on the top row for $330.00, and those on

the lower row, for $360.00.

Maintenance on the building consists of sweeping out once a

month.

Mr. Hartley is in poor health and would like an answer from

the Council as Soon as practical. Details of the transfer

could be worked out easily as soon as a decision is made.

(jftA/r

Dorothy O. Worrell
City Secretary
