regular meeting, september 8, 1969

page three

I

Planning & Zoning appointments in October. Mr. Smith
moved that the Council reappoint Mrs. Laura Ramsay and
Dr. Robert Walts to the Urban Renewal Board, and Mr.
Charlie Williams, as a new member. Mr. Zavesky seconded
the motion. Mr. Flores called attention to the fact that
the motion, if passed, would mean that incumbent Mr. Jose
Hinojosa would be left off, and the Mexican-American commun-
ity would not be represented on the Urban Renewal Board.
He said he felt this would be unwise, since the peeple affect-
ed by the Neighborhood Development Program were almost entire-
ly of that ethnic group. He added that he had always felt the
Negro community should also have representation on the Board.
It was brought out that Mr. Hinojosa had only served a few
months on the Board, having been appointed to fill the unex-
pired term of Mr. Salinas. It was stated that Mrs. Ramsay and
Dr. Walts had expressed their willingness to continue on the
Board, but it was not known whether Mr. Hinojosa had been con-
tacted. Mr. Jim Brown, Executive Director of the Urban Renewal
Agency, said all three members had been notified in writing
that their terms would expire September 20. It was suggested
that Mr. Flores call Mr. Hinojosa to find out whether he were
willing to serve on the Board, and the Mayor Pro Tem declared
a five-minute recess for that purpose. Mr. Flores was unable
to locate Mr. Hinojosa by telephone. The question being called
for, the following vote was recorded:

AYE: Oannelley, Smith, Zavesky
NAY: Contreras, Flores

The Mayor Pro Tem declared the motion carried.

I

Mr. Smith introduced Mr. Williams as the new member of the
Urban Renewal Board.

The meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.

~14ccjj) ftjQ,~c~

Ronald J.
