TIlis insurance became available in Texas Moy 15, 1970 ironically', <br />the date of the San Marcos flood. Two towns in Texas have been formally <br />approved for the program - they include certain districts in Bay town and <br />the town of Dickinson. Two other towns, Sherman and Victoria I understand <br />have been approved. , , <br /> <br />The National FlOOd Insurance Act is administered by the Federal Administrator,);; <br />Department of Housing and Urban Development. Texas inacted the flood control;}, <br />and insurance act enabling this program to become active in Texas. '.,' <br /> <br />The present act authorizes an emergency program to permit flood insurance <br />in areas covered by acceptable applications without waiting completion of <br />actuarial rate studies. The present program is underwritten by a pool of <br />89 insurance companies and subsidized by Housing and Urban Development. <br />"Coverage exists now only for one to four family residences and for contents <br />and small businesses and it's contents. The present act, however, is broad <br />endugh to allow extent ion to other areas. <br /> <br />The first step in thp. program is for the governing body to file an application <br />including a resolution and attachments supporting and documenting the ' <br />application. Applications are <br />then submitted by licensed insurance agents to a company member of the <br />National Flood Insurers Association. <br /> <br />Apparently, cities located in inland areas can anticipate early <br />of their submiSSions. The key to any of the applipations during this <br />period involves the detailed maps and engineering surveys that will <br />the flood fJ:1equency for the 100 year, period. ',' <br />
