Uzzell

The Mayor called the meeting to order at 7a30 p.m.

I

Dr. Jean Smith, Chairman o~ the Recreation Council, appeared before the
City Council with two proposals I 1. That the present 'Recreation Council
would work with the Planning & Zoning COmmission on the development of
neighborhood parks; and to get a~urance that the present park areas would
be dedicated as permanent parks; 2. That a start be made toward setting
up a Parks and Recreation Board, with the first objective being to employ
a professional to make a survey of San Marcos' recreational needs for the
next ten years. Dr. Smith recommended that Beverley Sheffield of Austin,
or his assistant, be selected to make the survey. The Mayor suggested that
o Dr. Smith and her committee work with Mr. FUller, to see if the cost of
such a survey could be worked into the 1964-1965 budget. Alderman Ruiz told
Dr. Smith that anything to do with future planning would have to go through
the Planning & Zoning Commission; that anything connected with the budget
would be in Mr. Fuller's province. By common consent, it was agreed that
Mr. Fuller should work with the Recreation Council to see if the cost of a
survey ,for the recreational needs 'of San Marcos could be worked into next
year's budget. Dr. Smith pointed out that a recreational program would
provide facilities for older people, as well as the young. She said it
would take at least a year or two to get a program into effect after a survey.

Don Uzzell appeared before the Council to discuss the intersection of James
and Academy Streets. The City Manager offered to "brief" the Council on the
mat ter.

An Ordinance annexing preperty on petition of Rader, Meredith & Yager was
introduced.
