Crook, requested by the Mayor to speak to. the matter <br />under discuss,ion, said: "They are serious about this pro- <br />gram in Wash.i ngton - it is more than just a gesture, Our <br />concern is for young men;. the economic .boost for the com- <br />muni.ty j s secondary to the purposes of the Pove.rty Program". <br />Dr. Crook sa i d Mr. Moyer.s had requested that the group meet- <br />ing with Mr. .Shriver be kept as small as, possible, twenty- <br />five maxi mum. Mr. Shr i. ver wi) I inspect Camp Gary and will <br />not tour San Marcos, Dr. Crook stated. <br />Fleetwood Richards, 'assi stant to Congressman Pi ck Ie, sai d <br />Mr. Pickle would like to talk privately with the City Man- <br />ager and Dr. ~rook before leaving. The Mayor asked Mr. <br />Pickle to remain whi Ie the Council passeifa Resolution <br />authorizing the.Mayor and/or the City Manager to act for <br />the City on Camp Ga~y matters. Or. Crook, City Manager <br />Fuller and his secretary, Mrs. Porter, withdrew with Mr. <br />Richards to the City Manager's office. <br /> <br />The Mayor introduced the Camp Gary Resolutionn and read it <br />aloud. Congressman Pickle asked that "Job Training Corps" <br />be inserted .in one paragraph, in order to be expl icit in the <br />type of training being planned for Camp Gary. The Mayor made <br />a note of the change. Mr. Pickle said: "What we do now does <br />not close the door on the Residential Vocational School". <br />Congressman Pickle joined the conference in the City Manager's <br />office. Alderman: Ruiz moved approval of the amended Resolut- <br />ion. Alderman Tut~l~ seconded the motion, and on roll cal I, <br />the following vote was recorded: <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />AYE: <br />NAY: <br /> <br />Pool, Ruiz, Serur, Tuttle, Whittenberg <br />None <br /> <br />The Mayor declared the Resolution Passed and Approved. <br /> <br />Dr. Derrick, cal led. upon by the Mayor, said he was represent- <br />ing Dr. James H. McCrocklin, President of Southwest Texas <br />State College, who was attending a Board of Regents meeting <br />in Hbuston. Dr. Derrick pledged full cooperation of the <br />Col lege in any way that may be required, <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />J. M. Sims, Pres i.dent of the Chamber of Commerce, was recog- <br />nized by the Mayor. He said he hoped that the City would be <br />able to get the air faci lities at Camp Gary for a Municipal <br />Airport. H.Y. Price said he thought we should not overlook <br />the possibi lity that Camp Gary might sti II be used for a <br />Residential Vocational School when the appropriation is made. <br />In the meantime, he said, every effort should be made to get <br />the Job Training Corps Center, since appropriation has already <br />been made for that type of education. R.J. Pollard, member of <br />the Steering Committee of Citizens for Camp Gary, said he was <br />glad that the door Was not closed on the Residential Vocational <br />School, and he felt the people of San Marcos should put them- <br />_J,ves beh i nd the present project" 100%". Car I Chr i stman, <br />Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission, said he agreed <br />with Dr. Crook's approach - that the first concern should be <br />the good the school could do for the young men of the area, <br />and the economic benefit to the community should be second in <br />importance. George Wentz, Hays County School Superintendent, <br />stated he was present as liaison between Texas Education Agency <br />and the School District. He said Dr. Edgar wished to assure the <br />City that he was eager to cooperate in any way needed. Mr. Wentz <br />pointed out that H.Y.
