Fu lieI'
Dorothy O. Worrell
Bruce McElroy

Visitors:

Mr. and Mrs. Wi Iliam Veidt, Mrs. J. Lloyd Read,
L.F. Springs

The Mayor cal led the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. Counci Imen
signed "Consent to Meeting."

Mr. Taylor read aloud a letter of resignation as Mayor of the
City of San Marcos, effective upon the adjournment of the meeting.
The letter is attached herewith as a part of the Minutes.

I

Alderman Tuttle asked for an explanation. Mr. Taylor said:
"When 1 ran for the off i ce of Mayor, I to I d the peop I e of San
Marcos that I would, if elected, give it the time needed. With
two ful I-time jobs, I cannot now give City business the proper
time. When I accepted the job as Plant Engineer and Maintenance
at the Job Corps Center at Camp Gary last week, I thought I would
have the time to continue as Mayor, and I did not think there would
be a conflict of interest. As it stands now, there is a conflict
of interest. I would rather cut off my arm than resign, but I have
no choice. I would entertain a motion to accept my resignation."

Alderman Whittenberg asked if it would not be possible for Mr.
Taylor to retain his post unti I the Apri I election. Mr. Taylor
said he had consulted with Dr. Baker, Director of the Job Corps
Center, and he had advised him to resign, since it seemed likely
that the City would get the water, sewer and garbage collection
contracts, thereby creating a conflict of interest if he remained
as Mayor.

I

Each Alderman expressed regret that circumstances made it necess-
ary for Mr. Taylor to resign. Alderman Tuttle moved that Mayor
Taylor's resignation be accepted, effective on adjournment of the
January 27 meeting. Alderman Whittenberg stated that it was with
regret that he seconded the motion. On 1'01 I cal" the following
vote was recorded;

AYE; Pool, Ruiz, Serur, Tuttle, Whittenberg
NAY; None

The Mayor declared the motio~ carried, and asked that one other
item of business be passed. He said that since the City election
was only two months away, it seemed best that a special election
not be called to elect his successor, but that Mayor Pro-Tem Serur
serve in the interim.

==
:::c
;>-;
~
W
