In the dis- <br />cussion that fol lowed, Dr. Pool offered the opinion <br />that this action was "two or three years late". <br />Alderman Damon said it should have been done ten <br />years ago when the City acquired the property. Alder- <br />man Froh asked how much it was going to cost the City <br />to get the Gary Airport in shape, once it was a~quir; <br />ed. The Mayor said there were several people inter- <br />ested in Jeasing the Gary Airport from the City, The <br />City Manager said it had been stated in the City's <br />application to GSA that the Gary Airport would be <br />self-supporting; that sev~~al had enquired about <br />renting hangars, etc. The question being called for, <br />the fol lowing vote was recorded: <br /> <br />AYE: <br />NAY: <br /> <br />Damon, Froh, Tuttle, Whittenberg <br />Pool <br /> <br />The Mayor declared the motion carried. <br /> <br />The question being raised, the City Manager stated <br />that the City could not maintain two airports; that <br />if the City improved the Municipal Airport, GSA <br />would not transfer the Gary air faci lities to the <br />City of San Marcos, since urgent need would not exist. <br />Alderman Whittenberg said it should be undepstood that <br />if the City spent several thousand dallal'S on improve- <br />ments at the Airport,then Mp, Lowman could not expect <br />the City to give the land back to him. Mrs. Veidt ask- <br />ed;"What wil I this do - wi I I the Government sti I I give <br />us Gary?" The City Manager said: "In all fairness to <br />both groups, the Federal Aviation Agency wi II not approve <br />transfer of Gary if San Marcos is going to maintain two <br />airports." Alderman Damon said he didn't think the stat- <br />us would be changed much. Mr, Fish asked the City Mana- <br />ger how much was being spent per year on the present aip- <br />port. Mr. Fuller replied: "Not much", Mr, Fish asked <br />if Mr, Fuller had stated in the application that the City <br />would not maintain two airports, and the City Manager <br />said: "I stated that we would not maintain two airports". <br />Mr. Fish said he thought the City ought to decide that <br />night "which way you're going". Joe Gafford told the <br />Counci I, from his personal observations at the Airport, <br />the benefits he thought San Marcos would realize by pro- <br />vi ding bas i c faci lit i es. <br /> <br />The Mayor recognized a delegation from Smith Lane, <br />with Mrs. A.M. Pehl as spokesman. They presented a <br />letter with fifteen signatures of property-owneps, <br />requesting that three street lights be instal led on <br />Smith Lane. The letter, read aloud by the Mayop, is <br />made a papt of the Minutes, Mrs. Wil lie M. Beck and <br />Mrs. Etta Mcintyre also spoke on the subject. Attent- <br />ion was cal led to "Item 16" on the Agenda: "Request <br />for street lights - Comanche and Conway Drive". Alder- <br />man Damon moved that the street lights be instal led as <br />pequested. Alderman Tuttle seconded the motion. The <br />City Manager stated the entire area needed to be studied. <br />Aldepman Damon amended his motion to include installat- <br />ion of lights on Smith Lane, Conway Dpive and Comanche <br />Stpeet.
