<br />llf) <br /> <br />regular meeting, september 25, 1965 <br /> <br />page two <br /> <br />The City Manager reported on a trip to Fort Worth <br />the previous day, to investigate possibi lities of <br />federal aid for local improvements through the new <br />Housing & Urban Development Act (PL89--117). Mr. <br />Fuller eXplained the wide range of programs cover- <br />ed by PL89-1 17, especially beautification for cities, <br />development of Open Space, park improvements, etc. <br />Where certified, requests for waterworks and sewer <br />funds carried 50% matching funds. Some programs <br />provided up to 662/3 % matching funds, ,the City <br />Manager stated. He said he had been advised that <br />it would be wel I to fi Ie a letter of intent with <br />William Travis Miller, Regional Director of HHFA, <br />and request~ the proper forms for application. <br />There was a possibi lity, Mr. Fuller, said, that <br />requests might be considered by priority. After <br />thorough discussion, Alderman Damon moved that the <br />City Manager be directed to fi Ie a letter of intent <br />to request funds as prov i ded under PL89- I 17. A I der- <br />man Poo I seconded"; the mot i on and on ro II ca II, the <br />following vote was reco~ded: <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />AYE: <br />NAY: <br /> <br />Damon, Froh, Pool, Whittenb~rg <br />None <br /> <br />The Mayor declared the motion carried. <br /> <br />The Mayor read aloud a letter from Leonard Church, <br />Reg i ona I Director of Urban Renewa I , Fort Worth, <br />announcing that Mr. Wi~bur Fairlamb of Urban Renew- <br />al would be calling on the City alYout four times a I <br />year, in connect ion wi t'h I oca I projects. <br /> <br />The Mayor read aloud a letter of resignation from <br />Or. Joe Wi Ison, Commissioner of the Urban Renewal <br />Agency (Local Public Agency) since its initiation <br />September 19, 1962. Dr. Wi I son sa i d ,he was res i gn- <br />ing on advice of his physician. Alderman Damon mov- <br />ed that a letter of appreciation for his service, <br />and expressing regret at the necessity for his resign- <br />ation, be sent to Or. Wi Ison. The motion passed, by <br />common consent. The Mayor said a successor to Dr. <br />Wi I son wou I d be named at the next meet i ng, and asked <br />Counci Imen to give the matter serious consideration <br />in the meantime. Or. Pool expressed the opinion that <br />it would be wel I to continue to have representation <br />from the Col lege Faculty on the Urban Renewal Agency. <br />AI~erman Damon enquired whether an organizational <br />meeting of the Local Public Agency had been held since <br />the September 13th appointments. He suggested that the <br />City Counci I should be kept informed aS,to the time of <br />meetings and action, in line with al I other committees <br />or commissions appointed by the City. The Mayor said I <br />he agreed, and that he looked forward to a good spirit <br />of cooperation with the Urban Renewal Agency. <br /> <br />Alderman Froh, recognized by the Mayor, said he want- <br />ed to make a statement to the press: he felt the stor- <br />ies written for the Austin American by Mrs. Veidt were <br />very good - that he felt the press had a right to crit- <br />icize the Counci I. Mr. Froh said he did not approve of <br />the scandal sheet - a "hate sheet" - put out by John <br />Morales, and "I think the Counci I should do something <br /> <br />about it".
