Swenson, W.E. Wood and Sam R. Stanberry of the U.S.
Corps of Engineers, presented a flood control plan for
San Marcos, under preparation for many years. Using maps
and charts, they explained the different approaches to
flood control, which involves the Blanco River, the San
Marcos River, Purgatory Creek and McKie (Willow Springs)
Creek. The present plan was based on diversion of water
from Sin~ S~rings to the Blamco River with a concrete
ditch. The bends would be taken out of the San Marcos
River to make a straight channel. Dr. Craddock asked if
this would not destroy the beauty of the San Marcos River.
Mr. Stanberry agreed that most of the trees along the River
would have to go, but said funds were available to beautify
the banks, after the engineering work was completed.
Total cost of the project would be $5,244,000. The Federal
Government would pay $2,808,000; the City's cost would be
$2,234,700. The City would be required to buy right-of-way,
and maintain it, build bridges, p~y for relocation of utili-
ties, and be responsible for any damages which might ensue.
The Engineers asked that the Corps be given a "Letter of
Agreement" based on a suggested form. The Mayor thanked the
Engineers for their pres~ntation , and said the Council
would give it further study.

I

Because several counciLmen expected to be out of town, the
regular meeting was postponed to June 15, 1967.

I

The Council adjourned at 7:20 p.m,

,,' Y /'" /l '/
~~ ~

Ellis Serur
May?r

1&~1:~'

Councilman

l:;--"....-\--.1.<.'''''''',*_

...~ ,to" I..

" 'r
X '
, " ., ()
c- ,',' '--l2-rrr~~" /
Herman Korff /~
Councilman

rEmmis Craddock, Ph.D.
Councilwoman

@aJlL&h) {x.- I ~L____'
Caesar A.
