regular meeting, june 26, 1967

page three

I

The Mayor read aloud a letter from Triumph Industries,
parent company of National Furniture Contractors, Inc.,
I oca I i ndu stry. A copy of the letter is made a part of
the Minutes. The Mayor said he had talked with Mr. Redmond,
the local manager, who wanted the City to loop an 8~inch line
'around the factory property. The particular need was for a
sprinkler system, as required by insurance regulations.
Mr. Whittenberg asked if it were not customary for the company
to pay for such a line. The City Manager exhibited a map of
the ~rea which showed that the new school wpuld require an
extension of the wat~r I ine some 3600 feet, plus a cross under
the highway. The material would cost between $11,000 and
$12,000, plus an additional $500 to $600 for boring under the
highway. Mr. Damon asked what was customary in simi lar cases.
Mr. Wolff said the City's policy was to extend the line 60 feet,
the property owner bearing the balance of cost. Mr. Damon said
he thought the matter required further study. Mr. Whittenberg
said money was the problem, and the Counci I should have the
courage to say "No". The Mayor said it was a good indu~try and
wputd benefit local employment conditions. The City Manager
suggested a more accurate estimate of cost be made, taking into
consideration the percentage of cost to be borne by the school.
Mr. Damon brought out that there would be no revenue from the
sprinkler system, but the school would provide revenue to the City.
By common consent, it was decided to request a plat of Triumph's
plans and specifications, and to study the matter from al I angles,
before a decision was made.

I

The City Manager gave a progress report on a number of items
pending completion. He stated the water concract with Gary
Job Corps Training Center was sti I I under negotiationn with
Texas Educational Foundation, Inc. George Reed had participated
in the negotiations, Mr. Wolff stated, and was entirely capable
of bringing the matter to a successful termination; Mr. Whitten-
berg enquired if there were any serious difficulty in coming to
an agreement. Mr. Wolff said it was a matter of the City's ask-
i ng a s light increase from the prev i ous contract, in order to
bring the charge into line with the City's ordinance fixing water
rates. He said it would mean an increase in revenue to the City
of about $9,000 per year.

Mr. Wolff reported that the new water wel I on Matthews Street
was pumping 1,000 gallons per minute.

The City Manager reported that the road was sti II open to
acquire the Sharp property for the proposed sewage disposal
plant, without recourse to the courts. He said James Cole,
consulting engineer for the City, was due to meet Mr. Sharp
to discuss further matters under negotiation, with the hope
of a satisfactory settlement.

Mr. Damon commended Mr. Wolff for working so di ligently right
up to his time of departure, in order to bring the Counci I up
to date on pending matters.

I

The regular meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m. The Counci I
went into executive session to discuss applications for fi I ling
the post of City Manager.

//~~ ~~~

-
:::
~
:zl
;.'"\f

{ATTEST: ,(l ' 1
I.j-,~" ~' ,j ,,(\Vl('i7J1 ;1(,
\ r' '1\' j ~ ( A J'i--L!14' J
,-~]:Ic f{ r_xi./li" 0.',"- '
Dorothy ~.
