<br />GENERAL INFORMATION: The City of San Marcos, county seat and commercial
<br />center of Hays County. is located on U, S, Inter-
<br />state 35 between Austin alld San Antonio, It is situated at the head of
<br />the San j'larcos River, \vhich has played a great part in the development of
<br />the City. The crystal clear San Marcos Springs discharge water at the
<br />rate of 164 cubic feet per second into the river at a constant temperature.
<br />
<br />The 500 mile crescent of the Balcones Fault divides the City. Thus, it
<br />enjoys the beauty of the rolling Texas Hill Country to the West as well
<br />as fertile black plains to the East, The climate is temperate. Average
<br />annual temperature 67.90 and average precipitation 33.88 inches,
<br />
<br />Idustry in San Marcos includes cotton gins, cotton compress, cottonseed
<br />1 mill, a wool scouring plant, livestock, and poultry processing plants,
<br />a mattress factory, a complete plastics moulding plant, a furniture factory
<br />and a fluorescent light manufacturing plant,
<br />
<br />Tourism is a big business in San Marcos, Within the city limits, at-
<br />tractions include the Aiuarena featuring a submarine theater and glass
<br />bottom boats, Also Texana Village and Skyride; Wonder Cave with its spec'
<br />tacular rock formations provide other attractions for the tourist, Nearby
<br />is the scenic hill country, state and federal fish hatcheries, Canyon Dam
<br />and Reservoir, It is estimated that over 800,000 tourists v~sit and stay
<br />ove might in San Marcos annually.

<br />Schools have played an important part in the growth of San Marcos. South-
<br />west Texas State College, Alma Mater of President Lyndon B, Johnson, has
<br />present enrollment of approximately 7,075 and is expanding rapidly, It
<br />is expected to double its enrollment by 1975, The campus with its tall
<br />buildings have given the city a very impressive skyline, and a nine-story
<br />dormitory is presently under construction, Sa1'l Marcos Baptist Academy offers
<br />military training for boys and is a co-educational boarding school for
<br />grades 3~12. Present enrollment is 548 with an estimate of 1,000 by 1975.
<br />Brown Schools for exceptional children has an enrollment of 300, Their
<br />work with mentally retarded and emotionally disturbed children has received
<br />Itiona1 recognition. Camp Gary I Federal Job Corps Center, is located just
<br />tside the City's limits but is served water by the City. The.re are about
<br />000 corpsmen and 300 staff employees residing at the camp.

<br />The City owns and operates its combined water and sewer system utilities
<br />which shows approximately $225,000 annual profit, and has recently voted a
<br />1% sales tax by a 4~1 margin which will supply revenue in excess of $100,000
<br />annually. Transportation facilities are provided by Interstate 35 (U,S, 81).
