regular meeting, april 14, 1969

page four

to the Council. Mrs. Obenhaus said the Austin Public
Library had received a $25,000 federal grant to set
up papberback libraries in self-service laundries. The
Temple public library had been selected as a "middle-
sized" library to .share in the experimental program, and
San Marcos, as a small library. The local library will
receive $5,000 in paperbacks, already processed and labeled.
The project was planned as an effort to increase use of
the libraries by "non-readers". It is hoped that when
books are returned to the library, people .i11 be made
aware of the facilities, and be encouraged to take books
from the public library. There will be no cost to the
City for the project.

I

Mr. Bean presented an estimate from Lockwood, Andrews &
Newnam on a study for use of acreage at Municipal Airport
(Gary) for a sanitary land-fill. Total cost of the study
was estimated at $6,000, with $1600 estimated for soil
tests. The engineers agreed to complete the study in
sixty days. Dr. Craddock moved .thatthe Council author-
ize the land-fill study. Mr. Zavesky seconded the motion
and on roll call, the following vote was recorded:

AYE:
NAY:

Craddock, Contreras, Danne11ey, Flores, Serur,
None Smith, Zavesky

The Mayor declared the motion carried.

The City Manager reported he had received a letter from
a television cable company requesting a franchise to
operate in San Marcos. On motion of Mr. Flores, and
second of Mr. Smith,. the Council voted Gnanimously not
to consider the request for a TV Cable franchise.

I

The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.

/// ~~

(.
