In deep water, thc student allows his body to drop <br />into a vertical position and then dcmOl1stratcs his ability to go <br />from the vertical to the horizontal and continues swimming for <br />a minimum of about 20 feet. <br /> <br />Feet-first jump into waist-dcep water:. Jump into deep water, level and swim. <br /> <br />15. <br /> <br />16. <br /> <br />18. <br /> <br />Plain front dive: After the student has mastered the steps in <br />learning the front dive, this skill check can be given, The stu- <br />dent dives from the deck into water that is deeper than his <br />height, in reasonably good form, levels off, and swims for a <br />minimum of about 20 feet. <br /> <br />Safety skills: Interspersed throughout the course, the student <br />demonstrates the skills listed under personal safety and ele- <br />mentary forms of rescue. These skills and a basic knowledge <br />of water safety are an important phase of the course. <br /> <br />Combined skills: The student jumps into deep water, levels <br />off, and swims 15 yards. Without touching the bottom~ he <br />changes dirl"ction and starts swimming back to the starting <br />point. Approximately halfway back, he :otates to the b~ck <br />position and rests either motionless or WIth gentle paddling <br />movements for one-half a minute. He then rotates to the <br />prone position and swims back to starting point. <br /> <br />19. <br /> <br />20. <br /> <br />ADJUSTED SKILLS FOR BEGINNER COURSE TAUGHT IN <br />POOLS WiTH NO DEEp.WATER AREP, <br /> <br />The purpose of this training is to enable instrUt;tors to complete <br />their instruction in the Beginner course and to Issue Red Cross Be- <br />ginner certificates in instructional programs where shallow pools <br />are used and it is not practical to use a deep-water facility. The <br />following numbered paragraphs correspond to the skills numbcred <br />in the Beginner course individual and combined skills. <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />- <br />- 42. <br /> <br />Adjusted Skills <br /> <br />17. Jump Into Deep W,ltcr <br /> <br />From a vcrtical tuck position or jellyfish 110at position, level <br />off to prone position and swim a minimum of 10 feet. <br /> <br />18. Plain Front Dive <br /> <br />From a prone swimming position, submerge head-foremost, <br />retrieve an object on bottom, bring to surface, drop the ob-- <br />jeet, and continue swimming on front for about 10 feet. <br /> <br />20. Combined Skills <br /> <br />From a vertical tuck or jellyfish float position, level off and <br />swim 15 yards. Without touching bottom, change direction <br />and start swimming back to starting point. Approximately <br />halfway back, rotate to the back position and rest either mo- <br />tionless or with gentle paddling movements for one-half a <br />minute.
