verification of the aircraft's relative
vertical position with respect to Runway
12 in conditions of poor visibility. Loss
of this lighting aid increases visibility
minimums required for instrument
landings.

Other Airport Aids

Although San Marcos Municipal Airport
is not equipped with an air traffic
control tower, it is served by the
UNICOM frequency for pilot-to-pilot
and air-to-ground communication. An
automated weather observing system
(A WOS-3) is a recent addition to the
airport facilities. A WOS -3 provides an
automated weather briefing over a
discrete frequency for pilot inflight
service. A remote communication outlet
(RCO) transmitter-receiver has also
been added, allowing direct
communication with Air Traffic Control
(ATC) services in Austin.

LANDSIDE FACILITIES

Landside facilities are those ground
based facilities providing support to the
operation of aircraft. They are essential
to the aircraft and pilot/passenger
handling functions. These include the
general aviation terminal and
administration building, aircraft
storage areas, maintenance hangars,
aircraft parking apron, and fueling
facilities. The existing landside facilities
are depicted on Exhibit 1D, Landside
Facilities.

1-10

TERMINAL FACILITY

The airport general aviation terminal
facility is located on the south side of
the airport, just off the entry road
(Airport Drive). The terminal is
approximately 3,000 square feet in size
and houses the administration office
and the Berry Aviation main offices in
a tri-pod building arrangement. The
facility provides space for airport
admini-stration, a conference room,
storage space, restrooms, flight
planning, lobby, weather data machine,
and telephone.

AIRCRAFT APRON AREAS

With over 2.6 million square feet (59
acres)of aircraft apron, the San Marcos
Municipal Airport has an abundance of
space for aircraft tie down, and aircraft
maneuvermg.

As previously mentioned, the airport
was developed to meet the critical needs
of World War II air combat. At one time
the entire apron surface area consisted
of flight line. In answer to the needs of
this high volume of aircraft and fueling
operations, the apron was surfaced with
concrete rather than asphalt, as
concrete weathered fueling operations
much more successfully.

Apron surface conditions vary from good
to poor. Areas along part of the north
apron edge, which is also the
continuation of Taxiway C, have been
recently resurfaced. Some other areas
