<br />(1) It is unlawful for any person to install or cause to be installed or to permit any person to <br />install an electric sign or outline lighting or to make any alterations, additions, changes or repairs to <br />an electric sign or outline lighting, without applying for and obtaining a permit for the work from the <br />building inspection division, except as otherwise specifically provided in this article. <br /> <br />(2) Only a licensed master sign electrician may apply for a permit to install, alter, make <br />additions to, change or repair an electric sign or outline lighting. <br /> <br />(3) If the sign is pre-manufactured, there is no need for an electrical permit to be obtained, <br />provided that no circuits are extended or added to the sign. <br /> <br />(c) If a person is properly licensed, no permit is required for the following work: <br /> <br />(1) Maintenance work or the making of minor repairs, including the replacement of Imnps, <br />sockets, fuses, drop cords, snap switches or other similar items, or the replacement of any electrical <br />device, circuit or component with a part of similar nature, size and application. <br /> <br />(2) The connection of portable electrical equipment to suitable permanently installed <br />receptacles. <br /> <br />(3) Any work involved in the manufacture, testing, servicing, altering or repairing of electrical <br />equipment or apparatus, except that this exemption does not apply to any permanent wiring or <br />permanent attachment. <br /> <br />(4) Any work conducted under the Registered Industrial Plant Program, section 14.607. <br /> <br />Sec. 14.602. Permit application; fee. <br /> <br />(a) All electricians and property owners who intend to perform electrical work under this chapter shall <br />apply for and obtain a permit from the building inspections office, unless the person or work meets <br />the requirements of an exception in this article. <br /> <br />(b) Applications for permits will only be accepted from the following persons: <br /> <br />(1) A master electrician licensed under this article. <br /> <br />(2) An employee of an electrical contractor designated by the contractor's master electrician <br />to obtain permits under the electrician's license. A letter of authorization stating that the master <br />electrician has designated the electrical contractor to apply for permits shall be filed with the building <br />inspections office and will be in effect for no more than one year. <br /> <br />(3) A property owner who certifies that the work will be performed by the property owner's <br />own hands, in a residence owned and occupied by the property owner as the property owner's <br />homestead. If the residence is also used as a business, then only a master electrician may apply for a <br />pennit. <br /> <br />(c) Once a permit application is determined by the building inspection division to be complete, the <br />division will inform the applicant of the amount of the permit fee.
