<br />Section VI, Part C <br /> <br />Community Policing Activities Summary <br /> <br />Through the investigation of cases, \ve work 'With the community to identify offenders, <br />identify high crime areas, and repeat offenses. Additionally, due to our close proximity <br />and the working relationship we enjoy with other neighboring law enforcement agencies <br />such as the New Braunfels Police Department, Hays County Sheriff s Dept., Caldwell <br />County Sheriff s Dept., and the Comal County Sheriff s Dept., we will offer our AFIS <br />services to those agencies as well. The Austin-San Antonio metroplex is one of the fastest <br />growing areas in the nation. For this reason, the perpetrators of crime do not limit their <br />activities to only one geographic area. Today's offenders are highly mobile and it takes <br />the efforts of multiple agencies working together to apprehend them. <br /> <br />Additionally, with the time savings realized by the acquisition of this MORE 2001 grant, <br />the Criminal Investigation Division of the San Marcos Police Department 'Will be able to <br />work closely with the departments' Community Policing Initiatives: <br /> <br />DOwntO\\l1 Foot Patrol: Assigned solely to patrol the city's dOwntO\vl1 area, oftIcers <br />closely interact with downtown visitors and merchants. Officers stay on top of crime <br />trends and address criminal activity as well as traffic issues. <br />Outlet Mall Unit: Officer assigned to this unit patrol the expansive outlet mall. The <br />largest outlet mall system in the State, it has over 100,000 visitors each weekend and <br />presents a multitude of policing issues. Large numbers of people in one areas, thousands <br />of vehicles, shoplifters and white-collar crime opportunities. <br />School Resource Officer Program: Officers assigned to the city's school system daily <br />interact with several thousand students ranging from 5th grader through high school. <br />Officers teach classes, act as counselors, address criminal activity many times before it <br />occurs, and act as a second set of eyes for school administrators to curb problems. <br />Crime Prevention Unit: The officer assigned to this unit conducts business and residential <br />security surveys and works with the other named programs to provide crime prevention <br />education to the community. <br />
