.:. ARCHITECTURE

The structures and architectural elements of Purgatory Creek Park are to contribute to
the overall aesthetic of the Park, while at the same providing necessary and unique
facilities to park-goers. As mentioned before, the intent of the architecture is not to
dominate the site, but to be responsive to this dynamic environment, to help establish a
lasting and unique identity for the park, facilitate educational opportunities, and to
accomplish this within a sustainable and flexible envelope. These more specific
guidelines should be considered in conjunction with the other design principles that are
mentioned in previous sections.

o General Guidelines

. Responsive to Site and Climate

The buildings should be and other structures should be made so as to:

y Take into account solar exposure: minimizing unwanted heat gain in the
warm months, utilizing solar heat gain in the cold months

y Use daylighting to bring natural light into interior spaces and reduce the
dependence on electrical lighting.

).> Take advantage of prevailing breezes for passive cooling.

· Contribute to Establishing an Identity for Purgatory Creek Park

The buildings and the spaces around them should be significant contributors
toward creating a "sense of place" and a distinct identity for Purgatory Creek
Park. Pursuant to that goal:

y Building and structures should reflect the Central Texas landscape and
building traditions, while at the same creating a strong indoor and outdoor
relationship. That does not necessarily dictate the use of an historic "style."
Rather it may prompt the use of features, such as wide overhangs, shaded
wall/roof openings and outdoor spaces, as well as an honest expression of
structure and materials.

y The buildings and structures, or at least one element of the buildings or
structures should exert a strong presence or identity. In doing such, this
element(s), combined with the abundant significant natural features could
become symbols of the Purgatory Creek.

%"

Carter = Burgess
Hatch Partnership, LLP
Jankedesign
