The designer should be cautious about aggregating the square footage of the <br />various programmatic elements into a single, massive structure that would <br />overwhelm the setting and the visitors. <br /> <br />y In plan, building massing should resemble rectangular "bars" that allow ample <br />light and air to all interior spaces. <br /> <br />y Whenever possible, buildings should be designed and placed so as to not <br />disturb significant trees and landscape features. <br /> <br /> <br />image 29 <br /> <br />· In order to conserve energy, create inviting and user-friendly buildings that <br />maximize the utility of indoor and outdoor spaces. <br /> <br />y Buildings should rely heavily on porches, wide overhangs, other shading <br />elements, and trees to shade indoor and outdoor spaces. <br /> <br />y Courtyards can be designed to function as outdoor "rooms".
