I

I

I

Sector One

Chapter 2 - Today

Transportation

Existing Thoroughfares
The existing system of streets and thoroughfares in Sector One have developed in
response to historical development patterns and natural constraints in the area. The major
thoroughfares that serve to bring traffic into and through Sector One are Hopkins
Street/Hunter Road, Bishop Street, Ranch Road 12 (Moore Street), MLK Drive, and
Wonder World Drive, The remaining streets in Sector One are collectors that serve to
move traffic within the area and to connect with the major thoroughfares. Hopkins Street
presents a unique planning challenge, since it serves as both a neighborhood street lined
with housing and local businesses, as well as a regional highway, funneling traffic
through San Marcos. This challenge is compounded by projected future growth in traffic
along this route.

State owned roads in Sector One include FM 2439 (Hopkins/Hunter), FM 3407 (Wonder
World Drive), and Ranch Road 12. All other streets in the sector are city owned and
maintained, All traffic signals in Sector One are owned and maintained by the Texas
Department of Transportation (TxDOT), However, an agreement between the City and
TxDOT provides that the following street segments will become city streets upon
completion of the planned Wonder World Drive extension, which will connect Wonder
World Drive from Hunter/Hopkins to Ranch Road 12 near the San Marcos Baptist
Academy:
. Hopkins Street from Wonder World Drive to the Ranch Road 12/Moore Street
intersection, and
. Ranch Road 12 from the Hopkins intersection west to the planned Wonder World
Drive extension intersection,

Traffic Volumes
The Environment and Engineering Department periodically conducts traffic volume
counts on city-owned streets. Traffic volumes represent weekday counts for a 24-hour
period. The traffic counts in Sector One included:

Location Sent/Oct N ov 2000 2002
1995
Bishop Street northwest of Hopkins 8,368 8,362 9,890
Street
M L K southwest of Nance 2,749 2,661 nla
Moore St. southeast of Hopkins 2,527 2,687 nla
San Antonio St. southeast of Hopkins 2,328 2,673 nla

DRAFT: September 13, 2004

2-22
