Due to the grid of relatively low-speed and low-volume streets, Sector One is one of the best areas of town for bicycle travel. However, improvements could be made to improve the bicycle-friendliness of the sector, particularly for children and less experienced bicyclists. Based on the 2000 Census, it is estimated that bicycling or walking is the primary means of transportation to work for about lout of every 20 workers (5%) in Sector One], Public Transportation There are three entities providing transit services in San Marcos, including Sector One. Durham shuttle bus system provides shuttle service throughout the area for Texas State students and staff. San Marcos Transit has two routes (#l Bishop Street/Purple Route and #8 Hunter Road/Yellow Route) that link the residential areas with the central business district and other areas of town. CARTS (Capital Area Rural Transit System) provides on-demand, door-to-door service for qualifying residents. The new San Marcos Station is located adjacent to Sector One on Guadalupe Street at the railroad tracks. This transit hub serves the local bus systems, Greyhound regional buses, and Amtrak rail service. Based on the 2000 Census, it is estimated that public transportation is the primary means of transportation to work for about I % of workers in Sector One, Rail Service Union Pacific Railroad tracks run along the southeast boundary of Sector One with an average of 20 or more trains per day.
