elsewhere in this nomination. The central and unifying nature of the trail network means that adults,
children and students from these neighborhoods, the SWTSU students, commuters and visitors to the
City of San Marcos and/or SWTSU will make extensive use of the proposed trails and sidewalk
system to move about and through the City of San Marcos to access the commercial, religious,
educational and recreational destinations. The commuter parking provided at the Ramon Lucio Park
will reduce traffic into Austin and San Antonio. Commuters will be able to park anywhere in the
available parking areas served by the trail system and access the other Intermodal transportation
facilities. The citizens of these neighborhoods will be automatically drawn to the dynamics of county
and city government, the library, the schools and the university easily accessible by the trail system
serving their residential areas.

San Marcos will benefit economically through increased tourism, the fastest growing segment of the
local economy. Visitors will quickly fmd out that nearly all of San Marcos will be accessible from the
various parking areas available to them. Visitors to the planned Visitor's Center (not a part of this
project) which directly adjoining the proposed Interpretation Center will immediately be made aware
of the ease of access to all points in San Marcos without using their cars. All of the parking lots
proposed by this nomination will include environmental features to remove pollutants collected on the
parking lot surfaces before releasing runoff to the San Marcos River. Environmental and ecological
benefits will result from the less frequent use of motorized vehicles to access the destinations
described above. The Purgatory trail segment will connect with a planned San Marcos Intermodal
Station (not a part of this project) which is planned to provide a commercial interstate bus stop, the
Amtrack railroad station, as well as commuter parking.

Older sections of the trail system around the Old fish Hatchery building and the "Cock" house are in
disrepair. A portion of this proposal is to bring these facilities up to standards. Bridges, sidewalks,
trails, and steps in these sections need replacement to accommodate the handicapped public (ADA
accessibility). All of the existing trails will be more clearly defined by the addition of concrete
"ribbon" curbing on both edges of the trail. Lighting and other streetscape enhancements for the trails
are proposed to provide safer use and access for pedestrians at all times.

The trails system and facilities proposed in this nomination will improve all social, economic and
environmental aspects of the City of San Marcos. The trails system will be accessible to all residents
including the handicapped and will reduce the dependency of motorized vehicles to conserve non-
renewable natural resources while at the same time reducing the need for additional streets in the area.

5
