FORM II-SYSTEM, INFRASTRUCTURE AND NETWORK - page 2

Long Range Technolo~ Plan:

Our long-range technology plan calls for the library to eventually upgrade the library automation

system to a Windows-based, client-server system, which utilizes PC's, rather than dumb terminals. All

terminals in the library would be able to access our on-line catalog, the Internet, and the databases

supplied through the Texas State Library. The addition ofthese new TIP funded workstations will help

us achieve this long range plan by installing cat 5 cable throughout the library, by increasing the number

of PC's available for the project, and by increasing our knowledge of network design, administration, and

maintenance.

Future Maintenance and Support of the Network:

The City of San Marcos has made a strong commitment over the years to developing a vigorous

technology infrastructure. All city departments are networked and the city has an outstanding,

knowledgeable MIS department that supports and maintains the citywide network as well as the

specialized software and hardware needs of each city department. Given the city's commitment to

developing and maintaining a citywide network, it is unlikely that the additional devices we are planning

to place on the network will create a major maintenance burden for the city. As workstations need to be

replaced, they will be budgeted in the regular library budget. In addition, the library has an active Friends

group which will be called upon to replace and repair computers, as needed, during the coming years.
