<br />FORM 11: SYSTEM, INFRASTRUCTURE AND NETWORK <br /> <br />Establish gUidelines for technical installation, determine what hardware and software IS needed and how the system can accommodate <br />growth (scalability). Briefly describe prOject network with regard to placement and intended use of resources; show how the network <br />Integrares with the applicant organization's long range technology plan. Explain how software and hardware acquired as part of the <br />proposed project will be upgraded, repaired. maintained, and supported in the future. <br /> <br />Existing Infrastructure and Network: <br /> <br />The San Marcos Public Library is connected via a T- I line to a city network which consists of a <br /> <br />centralized server located at City Hall, PIX firewall, and a T-lline to our Internet service provider, <br /> <br />CenturyTel. <br /> <br />The library currently has 17 PC's and an IBM RS 6000 server connected to the city network. Ten <br /> <br />of the PC's are Internet stations dedicated to public use. These were purchased using TIF funds. The <br /> <br />other seven are used for administrative purposes and were purchased with local funds. All of our public <br /> <br />Internet stations are connected to two laser printers via the network. <br /> <br />The library also has an integrated circulation, cataloging and acquisitions system which utilizes <br /> <br />the Ameritech Library System "Dynix" software. This software and the library's bibliographic database <br /> <br />are loaded on the IBM RS 6000 server located at the library. Our previous TIF grant enabled the library <br /> <br />to purchase the Dynix Unipac software. This software is loaded on the city's centralized server and <br /> <br />allows the library's online catalog to be accessed remotely via the Internet. All remote users of the <br /> <br />catalog are routed through the PIX firewall. <br /> <br />Proposed Additions to the Network Using LB4 Funds: <br /> <br />U sing the TIF LB4 grant, we propose adding 26 public workstations and three laser printers to the <br /> <br />city's network. All of these stations and printers will be used for public Internet access. Of these, ten <br /> <br />will be located in the library's Adult Learning Center and will be used to teach Internet skills and <br /> <br />database searching. When not used for scheduled classes, these ten "training" workstations will be <br /> <br />available for general public use. <br /> <br />The addition of 26 additional workstations to the city network will necessitate the purchase of a <br /> <br />new router and switch. The router will be located with the existing server at eity Ha11. All workstations <br /> <br />and laser printers will be cabled using Cat-5, unshielded twisted pair cabling and will be connected to the <br /> <br />centralized server and ISP through an existing T -1 line. <br /> <br />TIFB Form/System, Infrastructure & Network (1/981 <br /> <br />page 8 of 27 <br />
