142. <br />Regular Meeting March 24, 2003 Page 6 <br /> <br />ARMED FORCES PARTICIPATING IN THE IRAQI CONFLICT; AND EXPRESSING <br />FERVENT HOPE FOR A QUICK RESOLUTION TO THE CONFLICT. <br /> <br />Mr. Montoya moved for adoption of the Resolution and Ms. Narvaiz seconded <br />the motion. Mayor Habingreither stated there are citizens who have signed <br />up to speak. 1) Colonel Mike Distunan stated he is adamantly in favor of <br />this Resolution. He stated he has several family members who are <br />currently serving in the Iraqi conflict. He asked his family members to <br />pole their squadron in regard to this Resolution. Colonel Dishman stated <br />the desire of the troops, which is to support and respect the President <br />100%. 2) Karen Brown stated she would appreciate this Resolution taking <br />into account having differences. She stated she supports the Armed <br />Forces, but opposes the support of the President. She asked the Council <br />to remove Part 1 from the Resolution, leave Part 2 and revise Part 3. 3) <br />Karl Brown stated he prays daily for our troops. He also stated he is <br />opposed to the process, which brought the United States to this plan of <br />conflict. 4) Lamar Hankins stated his daughter is currently in the Armed <br />Forces and his son-in-law is serving in the Special Forces in Iraq. He <br />stated he feels the Council should not mix praising of the President with <br />supporting the Armed Forces in a Resolution. 5) Don Cudd read a letter <br />opposing the current military operation in Iraq. He also stated he <br />represents a group of citizens called No War San Marcos. He stated his <br />group is collecting signatures to take a stance against the President. He <br />opposes the proposed Resolution and asked Council to support a Resolution <br />asking the President to demand our troops to come home. 6) Bob Galinger <br />stated he supports this Resolution, which supports both our President and <br />the Armed Forces. Mayor Habingreither appreciates everyone's opinions. <br />He stated he lived through the Vietnam War and wants to make sure the <br />troops know Americans support their efforts. Ms. Narvaiz stated she <br />proudly stands by the Mayor on this issue. She stated the President is <br />the leader of our country and we need to stand together. Ms. Tatum stated <br />Recital 3 reads, The people of San Marcos, Texas include both citizens who <br />support a war with Iraq and citizens who seek a peaceful resolution to the <br />conflict. She stated she supports and respects the comments made. She <br />hopes everyone will pray for our President and for a safe return of our <br />troops. Mr. Mayhew stated he prays for the President and our troops and <br />proudly supports this Resolution. He also inquired who in San Marcos has <br />been called to serve. He stated he wants a Proclamation to support these <br />residents and their families as well. Mr. Taylor stated he proudly stands <br />by the Mayor and Council Members in support for this Resolution. Mr. <br />Montoya stated there is a time for war and a time for peace. He stated he <br />is prepared to support the President and our country. He feels this is a <br />great land and anyone else who does not feel like it is should leave the <br />country. Mr. Mihalkanin stated he respects the right of citizens to <br />express judgment on the issue of war. He stated the President acted within <br />the law. He stated he feels this Resolution attempts to recognize the <br />differences of opinion within the community and supports this Resolution. <br />The Council then voted unanimously for adoption of the Resolution. <br /> <br /> <br />
