Major rail routes parallel IH-35 in <br />Hays County. <br /> <br />Economic Profile <br />Total Hays County wages, based on the 2002-2003 Texas Almanac, are $159M. [The <br />2004/2005 Texas Almanac shows $227M wages.] Property values are listed at $4.8B and <br />annual retail sales are listed as $1.09B. [The 200412005 Texas Almanac shows $6.6B in <br />property values and retail sales as $] .] 8M]. <br /> <br />Agriculture <br />Beef cattle, goats, exotic wildlife, greenhouse nurseries, hay, corn, sorghum, wheat and cotton <br />with a market value of $IO.8M based on the 2003 Texas Almanac. <br /> <br />Land Use <br />The Interstate Highway 35 corridor in Hays County is a rapidly developing area due to the <br />close proximity to Austin and San Antonio. Land use is a mixture of educational, commercial, <br />light industrial/manufacturing, tourism business and residential. The northern portion of Hays <br />County is located in the Austin Metropolitan Area. Hays County experienced a 47.6% <br />population increase from 1990 to 200'0 and this trend is expected to continue. Land use <br />projections include major residential development, especially in the northern portion of the <br />county and along 1-35. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />The City of San Marcos is the largest community in Hays County and has a population of <br />44,769, which is 40.8% of the Hays County Population. <br /> <br />The City of San Marcos is home to Texas State University (TSU) which has an enrollment of <br />26,366 comprised of 13,500 commuters. Based on information included in the City of San <br />Marcos website (www.ci.san-marcos.tx.us) and the 2004 Annual Report, TSU also has 5,845 <br />employees.
