233
SAN MARCOS INTERMODAL (SMI) TERMINAL
Fact Sheet
Where will the terminal be located?
The property is a 4.8 acre tract located in the 300 block of South Guadalupe St., approximately
1/4 mile south of the Courthouse. The site sits between the Union Pacific and M.K.T. rail lines
on the west side of the street.
When will construction begin?
It is anticipated that site preparation will begin in the Spring, with construction to commence
shortly after that.
When will the terminal be open for business?
The facility is slated for a Fall 1999 opening, but depending on the duration of the construction,
and other factors we may be unable to control the opening could slip into early 2000, We are
scheduled to bid the project in March.
What is thf:. terminal's function?
In its initial phase, the facility will become the permanent home for the San Marcos Transit city
bus system, CARTS Community Transit and the Greyhound Lines' San Marcos terminal. The
terminal will serve as the transfer station for the SMT and as a layover point for passengers
awaiting outbound trips on the Community Transit paratransit service, It is anticipated that it
will also become a stop on the SWT student shuttle system. We have had very preliminary
discussions with AMTRAK officials about using the SMI and have incorporated that potential
into our site layout.
What will it look like?
The architectural design of the terminal is in a style taking elements of Spanish Colonial and
Southwestern and translating those elements into a local vernacular, but with transportation
generated design configurations determining the functional design and site layout. The building
will contain many of the amenities normally associated with transit terminal operations, such as;
a ticket office for all available modes of transportation, a freight counter for sending and
receiving packages, a comfortable, aesthetically pleasing passenger waiting area with vending
machines, accessible architectural features and restrooms, a covered waiting area for after hours
services, outside benches, bicycle racks, lighted secure customer parking, pay phones, schedule
racks and display boards and baggage lockers, In addition the site lends itself to the Spanish
influenced style of plaza/patio settings for customer waiting areas, as we incorporate the existing
1920's structure into the overall design,
-over- ' ~
~twt ..
II ~')M8 fr)Ù~ -{ ¡ ~ 6' ~
