Sector One Chapter 2 - Today
The Texas Department of Transportation conducts traffic volume counts on state -owned
thoroughfares. Traffic volumes represent weekday counts for a 24 -hour period. The
traffic counts in Sector One were:
T ,neatinn
Ranch Road 12 northwest of Hopkins St.
Hopkins St. southwest of Moore St.
Hopkins St. southwest of Bishop St.
Wonder World Dr. southeast of Hunter Rd.
1995
1997
2012*
91200
91900
n/a
91300
91300
151400
121700
131400
n/a
91800
101400
n/a
* projected
Pedestrian and Bicycle Transportation
The traditional street grid within the developed neighborhoods of Sector One generally
provide good connectivity to surrounding neighborhoods and downtown both for
pedestrians and bicyclists. Major barriers include the railroad tracks to the east and
Purgatory Creek to the south. Sidewalks are prevalent throughout the Sector, however,
the lack of sidewalks in some areas and poorly maintained sidewalks create significant
gaps that prevents the connectivity needed for an adequate pedestrian transportation
system. Due to the grid of relatively low -speed and low- volume streets, Sector One is
one of the best areas of town for bicycle travel. However, improvements could be made
to improve the bicycle - friendliness of the sector, particularly for children and less
experienced bicyclists. Based on the 2000 Census, it is estimated that bicycling or
walking is the primary means of transportation to work for about 1 out of every 20
workers (5%) in Sector One'.
Public Transportation
There are three entities providing transit services in San Marcos, including Sector One.
Durham shuttle bus system provides shuttle service throughout the area for Texas State
students and staff. San Marcos Transit has two routes (#I Bishop Street /Purple Route
and #8 Hunter Road /Yellow Route) that link the residential areas with the central
business district and other areas of town. CARTS (Capital Area Rural Transit System)
provides on- demand, door -to -door service for qualifying residents. The new San Marcos
Station is located adjacent to Sector One on Guadalupe Street at the railroad tracks. This
transit hub serves the local bus systems, Greyhound regional buses, and Amtrak rail
service. Based on the 2000 Census, it is estimated that public transportation is the
primary means of transportation to work for about 1% of workers in Sector One.
Rail gPrvirP
Union Pacific Railroad tracks run along the southeast boundary of Sector One with an
average of 20 or more trains per day. Six Amtrak trains per week also run on these
tracks.
1 This estimate is based on the data for the one Census Block Group (Tract 101, BG 2) that falls
completely within Sector One and contains 34% of the Sector's population.
Adopted: September 13, 2004 2 -23
