Sector One Chapter 2 - Today
The People
Texas State University has a major influence on San Marcos. It is the city's largest
employer, with about 2,500 employees, and its students, both on and off campus, make
up about a quarter of San Marcos' population. However, Sector One's demographic
profile is less dominated by the university's presence than is the city as a whole, although
it is situated fairly close to the university.
There are a higher percentage of married households in Sector One than in the city as a
whole (33% vs. 28 %), a higher percentage of family households (52% vs. 43 %), more
owner occupied units (41% vs. 30 %), and a more even distribution of population across
age ranges. The median age for the Sector (34.4) is higher than for the city (23.3).
Average household size in Sector One (2.6 persons) is higher than that for the city as a
whole (2.3). Finally, while only 42% of dwellings in the city are single - family, this type
of housing makes up 63% of those in Sector One. These figures indicate that Sector One
is generally a more stable family- oriented area, relative to the city as a whole.
Ethnically, according to the 2000 Census, Sector One mirrors the city as a whole, with a
White population of 71% (vs. 73% for the city), a Hispanic population of 39% (vs. 37 %),
a Black population of 7% (vs. 6 %), and other ethnic groups or those of multiple races of
22% both in the Sector and the city as a whole.
Demographic tables for Sector One are presented in the Appendix.
Current Population
The population of Sector One, based on an analysis of the 2000 Census, showed a
population of 3,138. This compares to a 1997 estimate of 3,637 prepared for the previous
Sector One Plan (although it should be noted that the boundaries of the sector have been
changed since the 1997 plan resulting in a smaller sector).
Sector One represents about 9% of San Marcos' total year 2000 population.
Adopted: September 13, 2004 2 -24
