Sector One Chapter 3 - Tomorrow
Transportation
This section of the plan focuses on identifying transportation system improvements that
are currently planned or are recommended to serve future development as detailed in the
Future Land Use Plan.
Goals
• Sector One should have "walkable" neighborhoods that are pedestrian - friendly for
children and adults.
• Safe bicycling routes on all major streets should connect neighborhoods with
desirable destinations, such as parks, schools, and shopping.
• Traffic calming solutions should be implemented on appropriate neighborhood streets
to reduce "cut- through" traffic.
• Adequate planning for internal circulation in new commercial development should be
required to prevent traffic problems that are typical of unplanned "strip commercial"
development.
• Street design should balance the need to move cars with community aesthetics and
safety for pedestrians and bicyclists (the goals of neighborhood character preservation
and pedestrian and bicycle safety should be as important as the goals of increasing
traffic capacity and traffic flow) .
• Generally, all streets within the neighborhoods, including those that function as
arterials, such as Hopkins Street, should be friendlier for pedestrians and bicyclists
and should not accommodate additional automobile traffic or higher speeds at the
expense of the safety of neighborhood residents.
The following sections detail the proposed street and bicycle /pedestrian improvements
recommended in Sector One. The City's adopted Transportation Master Plan and
Thoroughfare Plan provide more detail on many of these projects, as well as criteria and
timelines for project implementation.
Streets
(THIS SECTION WILL BE UPDATED WITH ROAD PROJECTS FROM THE
THOROUGHFARE PLAN ONCE IT IS ADOPTED)
Adopted: September 13, 2004 3 -9
