Sector One Chapter 3 - Tomorrow
Pedestrian & Bicycle Facilities
Neighborhood residents overwhelming believe that planning for pedestrians and
bicyclists should be at least as important as planning for car traffic. The Sector One Plan
acknowledges the city's existing policy commitment through the Horizons Master Plan
and the Transportation Master Plan to plan for alternative modes of transportation,
including bicycle and pedestrian routes. All streets should be planned to accommodate
safe bicycle and pedestrian travel.
Sidewalks
All new development within the city is required to include the installation of sidewalks
(except for single - family residential development at densities equal to or less than 1
home per acre). In addition the city has an annual program for installing sidewalks in
neighborhoods without them. This plan identifies the following areas of existing
development as the highest priority areas for sidewalks:
• Hopkins Street (gap completion)
• San Antonio Street (gap completion)
• MLK Drive
• Belvin Street / Hutchison Street
• Bishop Street
• Mitchell Street
• Burleson Street
• Wonder World Drive
All of Sector One is included within the "Sidewalk District" identified in the City's
Transportation Master Plan. This is an area in the core of the city that includes a
concentration of residential and commercial activity that will be a target area for
pedestrian facility funding.
Finally, all future roadway and intersection improvements should include the addition of
sidewalks, crosswalks, and other pedestrian features in order to provide a safe and
efficient network for pedestrian traffic. Safe crossings of major streets are very important
to residents in Sector One neighborhoods.
Bicycle Routes
This Sector One Plan identifies the following streets as potential bikeways in the Sector,
which include on- street routes, dedicated on- street bicycle lanes, and off - street bicycle
paths:
• Purgatory Creek Greenway Corridor —bike path
• Bishop to Stagecoach (across Purgatory Creek) —bike path
• Hunter Rd. (San Antonio to Wonder World Dr.) —bike lanes
• Wonder World Drive —bike lanes
Adopted: September 13, 2004 3 -10
