Residential Source Reduction
Goal: To generate 10% less residential waste, not including yard waste.
Description: The City of San Marcos is committed to the development of goals and objectives to
reduce significantly residential waste by the year 2000. The City is developing ongoing
educational programs to inform our citizens about the many options available to reduce the amount
of waste being sent to the landfill. Taking an active educational role will keep solid waste and
recycling management a priority. .
Browning-Ferris Industries (BPI), as part of its solid waste/recycling collection contract with the
City, is required to provide educational material to the community on solid waste disposal and
recycling through local newspaper articles, radio talk shows and programs aimed at elementary
school children. The public school program provides "MOBIUS", a character dressed in
recyclable items, for presentations on solid waste and recycling.
-- The City is currently working on two programs designed to inform its citizens of the many options
available in recycling and water conservation. The first is a book cover program for elementary
school students. The City's Public Works Department has allocated funds to purchase up to 1,500
book covers for all elementary students. These book c.overs will display a recycling and water
conservation message. The book covers provide an education forum for the students as well as
their parents when the books are brought home. A speakers bureau is available to speak to a
variety of civic groups and neighborhood associations. An estimated 5 to 10 presentations a year
will be provided.
Secondly, the City will implement a computer billing function which provides the capability of
printing messages on customer utility bills or adding inserts with conservation information. This
information medium will enable us to promote recycling and water conservation tips and options to
all residential and commercial customers on a monthly basis. This program will be implemented in
1997.
B. Residential Recycling
Goal: To recover 50% of targeted materials from residential recycling (which may comprise 25
% of the residential waste stream).
City Hall- 630 East Hopkins' San Nlarcos, Texas 78666.512/353-4444.
