Chapter 2 Sector One Today
Transportation
Existing Thoroughfares
The existing system of streets and thoroughfares in Sector One have developed in
response to historical development patterns and natural constraints in the area. The maj or
thoroughfares that serve to bring traffic into and through Sector One are Hopkins Street,
Hunter Road, Bishop Street, Moore Street and Wonder World Drive. The remaining
streets in Sector One are collectors that serve to move traffic within the area and to
connect with the major thoroughfares. Hopkins, Hunter, and Moore streets present a
unique planning challenge, since they serve as both neighborhood streets lined with
housing and local businesses, and as regional highways, funneling traffic through San
Marcos. Traffic pressure, especially along Hunter Road is expected to grow.
State owned roads in Sector One include FM 2439 (Hunter Road), FM 3407 (Wonder
World Drive) and Ranch Road 12. All other streets in the sector are city owned and
maintained. All traffic signals in Sector One are owned and maintained by the Texas
Department of Transportation.
Traffic Volumes
The Environment and Engineering Department conducted traffic volume counts on city-
owned streets in the fall of 1995. Traffic volumes represent 24-hour weekday counts.
The traffic counts in Sector One included:
Location Date Count
Bishop Street northwest of Hopkins 10/04/95 8,368
M.L.K. southwest of Nance 10/02/95 2,749
Moore Street southeast of Hopkins 10/02/95 2,527
San Antonio southeast of Hopkins 09/28/95 2,328
The Texas Department of Transportation conduçted traffic volume counts on state-owned
thoroughfares in 1995.
