Chapter 2 Sector One Today
resulted in over 100 demolitions or renovations in the last few years. Population has
risen faster than housing stock has expanded. Lastly, the Census figures may be
artificially low, since non-respondent follow-up was conducted after the end of SWT's
spring semester, when many student rentals were vacated.
In 1996 more apartment units than houses were under construction or proposed within the
city, so the percentage of renter occupied units is expected to rise, although household
size may decrease slightly. In Sector One, no multi-family projects have been built since
1989, and none are under construction. Several single family and duplex units have been
built in Sector One since 1990, and two large subdivisions are in the proposal stage in the
sector. Although no post Census figures are available on owner-vs.-renter occupied units,
Sector One may see a shift towards a closer balance between owner and renter occupied
units.
2-12
