A comprehensive check list of the local bird population will be
provided by the San Marcos River Foundation and information on the local aquatic and
,.
terrestrial habitats will be completed by Parks and Recreation and the River
Stewardship Project. Information collected will include habitat type, exotic or native
status, organism description and artwork.
In the second phase of the project the information collected will be organized and
- entered into a computer database. This information will then be used to develop the
interpretive signs, educational seminars and local species identification cards (Fig.
1 &2). Four species identification cards will be developed; one for the trees of the San
Marcos River, mammals and reptiles, birds and endangered species. Educational
seminar materials will include the vegetation of the San Marcos River, endangered
species of the San Marcos River, birds of the San Marcos River and man and the San
Marcos River. The Braille text to accompany the trail markers will also be developed at
this time.
.
The third phase of the project will include the production of sign materials and site
preparation. Sites selected for interpretive materials will be prepared of the instillation
of interpretive materials. At two selected sites viewing platforms and access points will
be constructed (Map 2 : sites 14 & 15). During phase three interpretive sign materials
will be submitted for production, assembly and final instillation at the prepared sites and
distribution at the interpretive cènter. The final phase of the project will be started in
April of 1997 and will consist of initiating the education seminars and guided tours of the
interpretive trail system.
Source of Sponsor Financing:
We would like to request 525,000 for the construction of the San Marcos River
Nature Trail System. The trail system will be funded through the existing Parks and
Recreation operational budget. This will enable us to begin work on the project
immediately upon approval of the Community Outdoor Outreach Grant. It is our hope
to have the nature trail system completed with the installation and renovation of the
Governor's Green House Interpretive Center.
