<br /> ??lJ <br /> start of the nature trail system and the main cenTer for the distribution of educational <br /> materials. <br /> Our Project will make a conscious effort to provide services to low income, minority, <br /> youth groups and handicapped patrons. Since this project will be located in public <br /> parks, there will be little or no cost associated with its use. In addition, most of the trial <br /> .- system is located adjacent to minority owned and occupied housing, allowing direct <br /> access to all park facilities. As of the 1990 census, the City of San Marcos population <br /> was composed of 38% persons of Hispanic origin, 5% African American, 56% <br /> Caucasian and 1 % composed of various ethnic groups (Appendix 1). This project will <br /> not only provided information to the public through permanently installed information <br /> sites, but will develop a variety of informative media and educational seminars on the <br /> San Marcos River system. Educational programs will be provided to the San Marcos <br /> School system with an emphasis on providing new experiences fo'r at-risk children. <br /> . <br /> Currently the San Marcos School system has indicated that 44% of its currently enrolled <br /> students may be at risk of dropping out (Appendix 1). This project will also address the <br /> needs of handicapped individuals through the development of an accompanying Braille <br /> text that will allow visually impaired individuals to follow the trail system. Educational <br /> seminars will also be prepared for local schools, community service groups and the <br /> - city's summer youth programs. Special hands on seminars will be provided for at risk <br /> educational groups and handicap rehabilitation centers such as the Brown School <br /> Treatment Center and Tangram Rehabilitation Network Inc. facilities located in San <br /> Marcos. This specialized trail system will provide a wealth of information and service to <br /> the citizens of San Marcos and the surrounding region. <br /> Project Action Plan: <br /> The San Marcos Nature Trail System project will consist of a four part plan. The <br /> initial phase of the project is scheduled to begin in June 1996 and will entail; a literature <br /> search and a species and habitat identification for the areas of the river to be utilized. <br /> The SVVT Wildlife Association will collect information on local mammals and reptiles <br />
