'-fqg

Rural TIP
Page 2

intersection at Highway 123 and FM 621. Although we understand
that TxDOT plans to initiate this project in the summer of 1996,
it does not appear on either the Federal or state Rural TIP for
1996 to 1998. We request written clarification of the status of
this project.

We want to encourage TxDOT to advance the Center point overpass
Widening project to a date earlier than 1998<. Traffic congestion
at this site of two major outlet malls is a serious problem with a
high volume of traffic using the narrow two-lane bridge and
inadequate intersection every day. The city of San Marcos has
already committed funds in our Capital Improvements Program to
widen Center point Road in conjunction with your project. The
design is complete and we were ready to bid the project, but
cannot proceed until TxDOT undertakes the intersection
reconstruction.

A TxDOT study indicated that the "best" design for Center point,
which would take the main lanes of IH 35 over the local road, will
cost $4.8 million. However, the proposed TIP provides $3.8
million in federal funds for this project. We urge TxDOT to
supplement this project with state highway funds to assure the
project meets the best design criteria.

Finally, we wish to restate our support for the Hunter
reconstruction to five lanes scheduled in the Rural TIP for
and 1998. This project will provide safer access to two
schools and a heavily populated area in the San Marcos area.

Road
1996
new

We request that TxDOT provide a written response to our city
council regarding the status of each of our priori ties, including
when they are likely to appear as designated TxOOT projects.

sincerely,

~.

Robert T.
