S's-e ;¡:
RIDER H
-.~ .
Schedul~ 5
R~spOnse Time T ~st

The Response Time Test is an ongoing test to determine if sufficient hardware and software resources have been
provided by DYNIX to achiev~ the minimum levels of response time. This examination will remain in effect for
five (5) years aft~r Final Acceptance of the System and remain the mechanism to establish and document acceptable
and unacceptable system response time ~rformance. THE CITY may decide to perform this test at any time. The
following criteria will be requir~ti: --
(a) THE CITY will pr~pare ddailed transaction logs to be used by operators in performing the test. These logs
will be composed of a mIx of transactions which the library feels will be comparable to the perfonnance
demands placed on this System for th~ tim~ pêriod indicated. Included in this rnix will be functions pêrtaining
to circulation, on-line public access catalog and technical services. DYNIX will be invited to participate on
the creation of these transaction logs and lend assistance in combining the proper combination of transactions
for each functional area (such as rnix of charge, discharge, renewal, hold, new patron, etc. for circulation).
Whil~ DYNIX will be invited to make recommendations on the transaction mix, THE CITY will have sole
responsibility for the tinal transaction log mixtures. The probable rnix has been listed at the conclusion of this
test d~scription.
(b) No t~st shall be deemèd valid unless a minimum of tifty (50) timings w~re performed at the monitored
work:station for e<!-.:h ty pè of transaction with e<!ch test lasting for at lèaSt thirty (30) minutes.
(c) Theæ will be thr~ (3) :;tafting l~vds nec~ssary to pt:rt"orm the t~st. Th~Sè are:
OPERATORS: Each designated workstation will be operated by a fully trained LiQrary Operator.
MONITORS: Selected workstations will have monitor pêrsonnel to measure and record response times. All
measurement must be taken with a stop watch. Use of standard watches or clocks will not be permitted.
JURORS: Library managers, consultants. city staff and DYNIX representatives will serve a system jurors. These
individuals will be present to su~rvis~ th~ propt:r application of t~st procedures and to calculat~ the final results
of the testis).
(d) The monitor(s) will use 'Response Time Test ~1easurement worksheets' to document all measured transactions.
It is the responsibility of the monitor to correctly note on the form, prior to application of test procedures and
to calculate the tinal results of the testis).
,
(I) The ty~ of terminal at which the measurements were taken.
(2) The line speed, where applicable, to the terminal where the measurement is being taken assuming that the
terminal is connected directly to the DYNIX System.
(3) Date.
(è) For c:ach individual mc:asuremènt observo:ó by the monitor, the number of seconds required for the System to
r<::.spond, shall be recordèd to the nearest tenth of a sèCond.
(t) While a broad mix of transactions will be simultaneously ~rformed on system terminals, only designated
terminals will be officially monitored and logged. Monitoring of timings shall not begin until after ten (10)
minutes of active use of the system. No function monitoring shall cease before a rninimum of thirty (30)
minutes of transaction monitoring has been ~rfonned.
CITY OF SAN MARCOS. PAGE R-42
January 17, 1994
