I ()/IJF
Director of Public Affairs SWT
August 11, 1994
ISTEA Enhancement Program
Texas Department of Transportation
125 East 11th ,street
Austin, Texas 78701-2602
Dear Proposal Reviewers:
I am writing to express my wholehearted support of the
San Marcos River Gateway Hike and Bike proposal. The
project would serve many individuals in the city of San
Marcos, as well as visitors in the community.
As a San Marcos planning commissioner for nearly a
decade and a three term city councilman, I have long
advocated projects such as the Courthouse renovation
being undertaken by Hays County, the downtown street and
sidewalk improvements being funded through CDBG, and
both the Main street and San Marcos! A Texas Natural!
program now underway.
It is a longterm goal of the community to revitali~e the
historic Courthouse Square/Central Business District. A
second goal has been to link downtown with our riverside
parks, the new Library, and other public facilities.
We have accomplished much in the way of public and
private downtown reinvestment, and much in the way of
linking such amenities as the Bicentennial Park,
Veramendi Plaza, Nature Park and the Children's Park.
Each of these projects has involved strong partnerships
with such entities as the Nature Conservancy, Soil
Conservation Service, Parks and Wildlife, and the
citizens of San Marcos.
However, much remains to be done. Perhaps the most
important single project is to tie the facilities
together and make them accessible to pedestrians and
bikers--a "soft,!! visual and human linkage. The
proposed improvements, if funded, will do just this.
Thank you for your careful consideration.
Sincerely,
ß~ í-. ~
Billy G.
