'8~
Strategy
Hiring and assigning an officer to work full time with school officials,
students, and others forges a unique partnership in San Marcos. The San
Marcos Police Department has not previously sought such partnerships. except
in its affiliation with Hays County Crimestoppers and in our efforts at forming
neighborhood watch programs here in the city. While the SMPD is currently
seeking to increase its interaction with other community organizations, this
proposal represents the first step forward. By design, this proposal is aimed at
serving a narrow but important segment of our service population: our youth.
It is believed. however. that by better serving our youth. we will benefit the
community at large.
.
Our vision for accomplishing this task is fairly simple. The SMCISD. SMPD.
Drug Free San Marcos, Hay County juvenile Probation Department, the San
Marcos Chamber of Commerce. and the Downtown Association will be invited to
send representatives to serve on a task force whose purpose is to monitor
policies and procedures on discipline and gang issues. This forum will be
,
interactive and for the first time will include a representative from the police
department. While this body will help clarify the job description of the officer
assigned to this function. some general expectations can be articulated up
front. These include:
.Provide a uniformed presence at the high school and junior high
school thereby increasing students' and faculties' feelings of safety and
security;
11
