<br /> Financial Institutions <br /> There are 3 banks located in San Marcos which had combined deposits on 2-28-91 of $276,971,000. <br /> Educa tional F acili ties <br /> Southwest Texas State University, a full 4 year multi-purpose university, is located on a hill overlooking <br /> the City of San Marcos. It is easily identified by the castle-like structure of Old Main which was the first <br /> building constructed when the University, then a college, began operation in 1901. It became a University <br /> on May 15, 1969, and now has an enrollment of more than 20,000 students from Texas, 48 other states and <br /> 60 foreign countries. The system has an estimated 1991 enrollment of 6,675. <br /> The San Marcos Baptist Academy and the Brown School are 2 private educational institutes within the <br /> City. Also located in the City is Gary Job Corps, a federal training center which provides technical <br /> training and employs 635 persons. <br /> Churches <br /> San Marcos has 39 churches representing all major denominations. <br /> Library <br /> The City operates a public library with over 56,000 volumes. Southwest Texas State University Library <br /> has over 750,000 volumes. <br /> Recreation <br /> Aquarena Springs and Wonder World, two of the State's top tourist attractions, are located in the city <br /> limits. <br /> The City maintains 7 public parks, consisting of eight baseball fields, 1 olympic size swimming pool, <br /> 6 lighted tennis courts and various picnic facilities.
