facing the city today or in the future. But of those
registering a response, traffic and traffic-related issues
emerge as the most pressing problems facing the city today.
As can be seen in Table 10, 14.7% of respondents say
"traffic" is the city's current major problem, 6.6% say
"street conditions" are the most important problem, and 5.1%
say "parking" is the biggest problem. Taken together, these
responses indicate a significant concern about traffic issues
among San Marcos citizens~
When asked to consider probable problem areas in the
next five years, "traffic" continues to be the major problem
area listed by respondents. Also high on the list of future
problems mentioned by significant proportions of respondents
are "water shortage" (10.3%), "overcrowding" (8.1%), and
IIcity services (7.0%).
When asked what they liked most about San Marcos,
precisely the identical proportion (36.4%) responded "natural
beauty" and "small town atmosphere." Considerably smaller
proportions mentioned other items as shown in Table 10.
When asked what they liked least about San Marcos,
the most common answer was "traffic" (mentioned by 18.5% of
respondents). Significant proportions also mentioned
"limited shopping and entertainment opportunities" (12.4%)
and "street conditions" (9.0%).
39
