Section 1: Community Profile <br />Introduction <br />The Community Profile is a review of demographic, income, employment, and <br />housing data of San Marcos, Texas, gathered from the 2010 and 2000 Census <br />estimates, 2006 - 2010 American Community Survey (ACS) 5 -Year estimates, City <br />of San Marcos, San Marcos Chamber of Commerce, and other sources. The <br />following sections provide an overview and analysis of the current status of the <br />community in San Marcos: <br />• Demographics - analyzes the basic structure of the community in terms of racial <br />diversity, population growth, and family structure. <br />• Income - analyzes income sources, the distribution of income across income class, <br />and poverty. <br />• Employment - examines unemployment rates, occupation trends, and major <br />employers. <br />• Public Transportation — analyzes access and availability of public transit system. <br />• Housing - examines data on the housing stock, with particular attention to the age of <br />the housing stock, vacancy rates, tenure, and cost burdens. <br />Detailed analyses will concentrate on three major ethnic groups in San Marcos: <br />White, Hispanics, and African - Americans. All other ethnic groups are smaller in <br />number and percentage and, therefore, the results of their analysis will not be <br />presented in detail. The analysis is supported with tables and maps provided as <br />reference materials. Most of the data presented in the tables and maps are directly <br />referenced in the text. There may be some cases where additional information was <br />included for the reader's benefit, though not specifically noted in the text. <br />1.1. Demographics <br />The demographic analysis of San Marcos concentrates on the magnitude and <br />composition of the population and changes that occurred between 2000 and 2010. <br />Please note that the attached maps present data by census tract with an overlay of <br />the city limits. For reference, Map 1.1, on the following page, provides a visual <br />representation of San Marcos. <br />1 <br />
