They are <br /> all very enthusiastic about the idea. Although these <br /> groups are the primary target audience for the seminars, <br /> they Hi 11 also be open to the general public, <br /> H, Expansion of our bilingual publicity campaign to <br /> introduce members of the ESL community to the services <br /> and resources of the public library. <br /> In the past months the library has increased its <br /> publicity efforts in the ESL community. The Project <br /> Coordinator has developed two bilingual fliers, produced <br /> bilingual public service announcements for area <br /> newspapers and the radio station, and spoken to several <br /> Hispanic organizations. It appears that these efforts <br /> have been successful as our ESL and GED programs are <br /> growing. In the coming year, the Coordinator plans to <br /> produce a bilingual flier advertising the services of the <br /> Job Information Center, produce a bilingual employment <br /> resource guide, continue speaking to organizations <br /> representing the ESL community, and distribute printed <br /> information through door-to-door canvassing of Hispanic <br /> neighborhoods. <br /> VI. STAFFING OF THE PROJECT <br /> The Lifelong Learning Project will be staffed as follows: <br /> A. Lifelong Learning Project Coordinator <br /> The Project Coordinator is currently a twenty-hour-per- <br /> week position funded by our FY 1989 grant. Due to the <br /> increased responsibilities of the position detailed <br /> below, we are proposing that the project coordinator be <br /> expanded to a forty-hour~per-week position in FY 1990. <br /> Our current Coordinator, Jonathan Engel, is bilingual <br /> (English-Spanish), He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in <br /> Latin American Studies and a Master of Arts degree in <br /> Social Anthropology, both from the University of Texas <br /> at Austin, Field work for his Master's thesis Has <br /> carried out in a low income urban setting in Guadalajara, <br /> Mexico, During this time he met and interviewed many <br /> Mexican men and women who had substantial work experience <br /> and/or relatives in the southwestern United States. This <br /> experience provided him with an understanding of, and an <br /> empathy for, the many problems that foreign language <br /> speakers face in our society, Mr. Engel has proven to be <br /> very effective with regard to tutor training, wot-king <br /> with ~tudents and tutors, networking with other agencies <br /> which service the ESL population, and developing an <br />
