Mayor Morris called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. <br />, <br />i Mayor Morris introduced the ten-minute citizen comment period. <br />(1) Nancy Chaukin of SWT provided information to the Council <br />regarding the SWT Core Values Task Force Symposium regarding civil <br />responsibility and higher education. She stated 300 attended, and a <br />second symposium will be held on April 26 at the San Marcos Room at <br />SWT from Noon to 1:00 p.m. It will be an open forum. (2) Greg <br />Snodgrass stated this was the first community wide communication <br />held between higher education and the community. They t~ught why <br />education is important, asked parents what they expect of higher <br />education, discussed values, community services, volunteerism and <br />the need to continue this type education (Mr. Guerra present at this <br />time). (3) Dr. Elvin Holt stated the students' values were <br />constantly changing. He stated there are declining values in <br />society, and the University should playa role in shaping values. <br />(4) Mary Gonzales stated she has lived here all her life, and there <br />is a need to share what we have. Many are hungry in this community. <br />Some seniors with fixed incomes and/or no income have to address <br />paying for cost of medication and doing without repairs that should <br />be made. She stated we must respond where food is needed, and the <br />Food Bank needs a permanent home. (5) Kyev Tatum stated the April 4 <br />public hearing on the CDBG funds lasted too long, and many had to <br />wait too long to make their presentations and were exhausted. He <br />stated Staff should view the projects to gather any needed <br />! information. (6) Gary S. Katz stated he was before the Council in <br />¡ February and wants to thank the City for their support in the <br />cleanup of homes in the Haynes Street area. The city was quick to <br />respond to additional street lighting and the Police Officers <br />responded quickly to calls regarding vandelism. <br /> <br />Mayor Morris introduced for consideration adoption of an Ordinance <br />on emergency, the caption which was read as follows: <br /> <br />AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS, <br />TEXAS, AMENDING THE CITY BUDGET ORDINANCE FOR THE 1994-1995 <br />FISCAL YEAR TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR HUNTER ROAD/HOFHEINZ STREET <br />WASTEWATER LINE EXTENSION; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. <br /> <br /> <br />* Mr. Guerra present at 7:42 p.m. <br />
