(1) Dave Newman was
supportive of a non-binding referendum being placed on the ballot
regarding the City's acquisition of Aquarena Springs and read into the
record a letter he had written to the File in October, 1999. (2) Dan
Praver stated he wants the City to buy Aquarena and does not think
Aquarena has been taken care of. He thinks little has been done to clean
up the area, and feels it is in a state of neglect. He is supportive of
the referendum issue. (3) David Wendel encouraged the City to look into
the possibility of acquiring Aquarena. He stated SWT has been a poor
steward of the river. (4) Jim Studer, Vice President of Student Affairs
at SWT, stated he is in favor of the Alcohol Enforcement Team. He thinks
they are addressing the issue and have had success in reducing large
parties and minors drinking. He thinks the task force should continue and
thinks any problems that may exist can be worked out with the County
Sheriff's Department, the City Chief of Police and SWT Chief of Police.
Dr. Studer stated they would continue to increase education regarding
alcohol and will be presenting additional recommendations in mid February.
(5) Carol Coughlin stated businesses to sell alcohol need to also be held
accountable if they are selling alcohol to minors. She also stated she is
in favor of the City owning Aquarena. (6) Dianne Wassenich requested the
Council consider postponing the Planning and Zoning Commission appointment
of an ETJ representative. She thinks Jon Cradit has done a good job and
would like Jim Byrn to double check the distance from the City limits to
Jon Cradit's residence to determine whether or not he lives in the
extraterritorial jurisdiction of the City. She stated if the Council
proceeds with the P&Z appointment, she wants to recommend Sherwood Bishop.
She also stated she is in favor of the City pursuing the non-binding
referendum on the ballot to acquire Aquarena. (7) Chris Pinero stated he
hopes to hear more input regarding Harvey Ginsburg's comments. Mr. Pinero
also stated he is a resident on MLK at Mitchell and has witnessed three
accidents in the past thirty days from people running the stop signs. He
moved to San Marcos from a city (Seattle) that used the traffic pillows
and cautioned the Council to look at their use very carefully.
