McDonald, Urban Renewal; <br />Jack Major <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />The Mayor called the meeti n9 to order at 10: 30 a. m q and stated <br />that they had been called together to heare repor~ from the City <br />Manager on damage occuring from the flash flood suffered by San Marcos <br />on May 15. Mr. Smith called attention to some fifty pictures of <br />San Marcos under flood which lined the walls of the Council room. <br />The pictures were,taken by Herman Korff. <br /> <br />Mr. Bean int~oduced Col. Harry B. Johnson, U.S. Army Reserve. <br />Col, Johnson said, from his experience during flood relief operations, <br />that better communications were needed so Army Reserve units could <br />tie into Civil Defense operations. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />The City Manager said he would like t~br~ng the Council up to date <br />on preliminary estimates on flood damage. No estimate on pr~ijte <br />property was possible to obtain. Damage to public property was <br />approximately $1,000,000. At least 50 cars - possibly 75 - had <br />been under water or washed away. Mr. Bea~listed damages in the <br />following categories: <br />Public Schools: $75,000; City Streets: $500,000; City Parks: <br />$10,000; one ~~er line, alone:$10,000; one water line on Olmos Drive: <br />$10,000. No estimate had been received from Warren Freudiger on <br />damage to public housing. Mr. Bean reported two deaths by drowning; <br />nine injuries, three persons still hospitalized. It was estimated <br />534 families had been directly affected. The City Manager reported <br />American Red Cross had set up headquarters in the City Park Recreation <br />Building; the Salvation Army in the old State Bank Building; and <br />the Small Business Administration in the old "Marvel Shop", 138 North <br />LBJ Drive. <br />Councilman Yarbrough asked what the greatest need was~,from the <br />standpoint of the City's operation.
