Alderman Younger info~d 001.. Belote that a survey
of traffic is being ..de. A general discussion of the problem, already
recognized by the Council, ensued. It was brought out that Hopkins Street,
whe~e Col. Belote resides, is Statemaintained~ and permission must be obtained
frOlll the state Highway Department before any signs may be put up. Aldeman
Stokes suggested that a ndarpatrol unit lllight be the only solution. The
Mayor thanked 001. 8elote for coming and assurred him that the necessary action
would be taken aft,er the present survey is cOlllpleted. '

The next person to appear before the COuncil was Mr. J.C. Jackson, who also
wished to protest a traffic problem, and request a light. at the corner of
Guadalupe and.Ooma! Streets. The Mayor infotllled Mr. Jackson that GuadalUpe,
being on Loop . 82 through San. Marcos, 1scontrolled by the State Highway Department
and a previous request for a stop light at that corner had been refused. The
City Manager said a traffic check had been made at that intersection and the
Highway Department turned d_n the report on the basis that the - fl_ of traffic
did not warrant one. The City Manager said the State might approve installation
of a "MelllOry Light", with treadle control. This would cost about $1100.
Mr. Joe Rodriguez, representing Better Citizens for Bette~ Governaent, also spoke
of the dangerous traffic at that corner, and introduced Mr. Jees Smith, who told
of a recebt w~eck he had been involved in at the corner of Guadalupe and Coalal.
Mr. Luciano Flores, Chairman of B.C.B.G., alsQ spoke on the need for a light at
GuadalUpe and COmal. He said they th'ought it best to go through proper channelSl
.We decided if the City WOuldn't install a light, we'd go to a Senator or
Representative-.
The Mayor suggested that the City Idght make another request of the Stat.
Highway DepartJllent, and, if again refUSed, then B.C.B.G. might see what they
could do. Alderman Ruh voiced the opinion that B.C.S.G.could get the light
in 30 days if they used that method. AldemanStokes suggested that the club
go ahead, anyway.

Mr. Jackson enquired about the lighting project in South End Addition of San
Marcos, which he referred to as -The Addittion the City has forgotten". He stated
that the Wallace Addition, which was started after South End, is already lighted. ,
Alderman Stokes replied that the area in question was the responsibility of LCRA;
the City requests so uny lights from LCRA in each area, and South End is in the
Plan.

The !len who appeared before the COuncil on the traffic and lighting problems
were thanked by Mayor Allen, and invited to stay for the remainder of the
session.

~
