Mr. Taylor stated the <br />purpose of the meeting was to consider items contained in a <br />letter from Jo,hnny Cantu Mora I es to the Counc i I ,dated August <br />19, 1964, a copy of which is attached and made a part of the <br />Minutes. He noted that Mr. Morales was not, present in the Council <br />Room, although he had been notified by registered mail that he <br />would be given an opportunity to be heard at this hour. Mr. Taylor <br />started reading the letter aloud. Mr. Morales came into the <br />Council Room shortly thereafter, and the Mayor invited him to <br />make his plea in person. Mr. Morales asked Mr. Taylor to continue <br />I'eading the letter. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />At the conclusion of the I'eading, the MayoI' asked Mr. Morales if <br />he had anything to add and he said: "No". The/Mayor then recog- <br />nized Corpol'atian Judge Kenneth E. Sutton, in ol'der that he <br />might answer the charges made against him in the letter. Judge <br />Sutto'; sa i d he had been constant I y harassed in h is court by <br />Mr. MOl'ales; that Mr. ,Morales had printed statements about him <br />in his publ ication, "EI, Reportero", which were untrue, citing one <br />as an example.Hesaid he had consulted an attorney about his duties, <br />responsibi IHies, and the extentaf his authority, and th.at, <br />insofar as he could detel'mine, Corporation Court had been conduct- <br />ed in a strictly legal manneI'; that his cases, some 800 in the <br />past sixteen months, were entel'ed in the docket book and signed. <br />"Gentlemen",he concluded, "you put me down there to handle the <br />cases, not to make money. I have neveI' Ii ed;1 have never cheat- <br />ed; I have tried to do my duty." . <br /> <br />Col. Ja~es W. Hill was recognized from the floor.
